In lieu of my typical Thursday night running around to make an appearance at mulitple events I was forced to limit my stops for the evening. As few of you know, I have a full-time day job as a high school counselor on the southside where I have been providing social emotional support to the entire student body for the last four years. Last night, my seniors (who I have been working with since their freshman year – yes, four years!) graduated last night. So the first half of my evening I sat in the Harold Washington Cultural Center alternating between beaming with pride and crying tears of joy as my seniors crosed the stage and received their high school diplomas (an incredibly fete for the majority of them when the odds have been stacked against them for so long). I am so incredibly proud of the entire class of 2011 – in total (out of approximately 112 students), they had a graduation rate of 92%, were accepted into over 100 colleges, and received over 1.2 million dollars in scholarships (some receiving full rides). Yes, in the words of Drake, my babies are “…gonna be successful!”
Okay, enough bragging about my amazing students. After witnessing my seniors cross a significant milestone in their lives and snapping a bunch of photos, I headed off the Tantrik for the 3rd annual M.Go Cirque de la Moda Fashion Extravaganza hosted by the lovely Jaslene Gonzalez – winner of America’s Next Top Model (ANTM) Season 8. Natalie Martinez of NBC also assisted in hosting the evening. And celebrity model Betzaida Ramirez of Mega 95.5 graced the runway.
Representing colorful fashions and vintage wears during the evening were M.GO Fashion and Company (Circus Theme Collection), XIT Euro Boutiques (Trendy Spring/Summer Wear), and Le Thrift (Upscale Designer Vintage). Also, Absolut provided a hosted bar from 7:30-9pm and Moonshine Chicago & Fashion Fest 2011 provided appetizers prior to the show.
In addition to all of the people and places mentioned, there were several other VIPs in the house including photographers Steve Starr, Javier Enriquez, and Danielle Sanders; William Holdeman of My Drink On, Julian on the Radio of CBS Radio, Sandra Smith Doghmi of Red Carpet Concierge, and Erick Moreno of Eureka Chicago. And please let me not forget the lovely ladies I had the honor of sitting next to during the show: Zee Gustafson of Z Artistry, Carrie Wenzel of Chicago Fashion Resource, and Sarah Zakareckis of Hush Chicago Magazine.
Great people plus Great fashion equals a Great evening in my book. Here are some photos from the show. To view the entire album please LIKE NYK on Facebook! And to check out even more photos please visit the talented Steve Starr’s gallery.
