Chicago Fashion Incubator Open House

Today was a great day for fashion. It was the perfect addition to my (slightly extended) lunch break. The Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI) open house was an opportunity to meet the designers, view their current collections up close and get a behind-the-scenes view of the Incubator workspace.  For those of you who don’t know, CFI is sponsored by and housed in Macy’s on State Street.  Each year they choose 6 designers and give them a years worth of free educational seminars (taught by local, seasoned industry professionals) and a studio to help start/grow their business. Kiran Advani, Director of Fashion Programing for the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture, had this to say about the program,”It’s like Project Runway without all of the competition” and it’s true.  It’s an opportunity for the designers to develop their styles and work together to become better entrepreneurs.

Lara Miller is the Executive Director of the Chicago Fashion Incubator as well as a local, independent designer.  She was one of five winners of Chicago Magazine’s 2011 Green Awards for her commitment to locally sourced and produced garments that use only low-impact, organic materials.  She also serves on the Mayors Fashion Counsel.

Concetta Cipriano, Shavonne Dorsey, Taneasha Prunty, Eric Kipp, Crystal Simms, Kahindo Mateene

Meet the Chicago Fashion Incubator 2011 designers in residence (designer descriptions by Meghan Turner of Style Admirer Chicago).  Make sure you click on the links below to get more details about each fashion figure.

Concetta Cipriano: Cettina, a collection of ready-to-wear garments embodies the designer’s clientele, a balance of femininity, strength, and beauty, with intricacy, structure, and simplicity.

Shavonne Dorsey: The Siobhan Apparel line specializes in fashion and fit for the plus size market featuring simple sheath dresses and powerfully feminine separates.

Taneasha Prunty: Gidi is a womenswear line of evening dresses and gowns that exude subtle allure and blend vintage sophistication with modern flair.

Eric Kipp: Eric Kipp Custom Clothiers is a custom clothing company that focuses on sharply tailored suits and separates for men that easily transition from office to evening.

Crystal Simms: Crystal B. Designs is an avant garde label that is filled with architectural garments that enhance the features of the female figure.

Kahindo Mateene: Modahnik is a socially conscious womenswear line of modern and feminine pieces that fuse the designer’s vibrant African heritage with western design sensibilities.
