World Music Festival

From September 15 to 22, the City of Chicago transforms into a global center for the best of today’s international music when the 13th annual World Music Festival: Chicago 2011 returns. Presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), in partnership with the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture (COTC), the city-wide, multi-venue, eight-day festival features acclaimed musicians from more than 40 countries. Featuring traditional and contemporary music from diverse cultures, the performances and events include a combination of free and low-cost ticketed concerts, many of which are family friendly.

The festival kicks-off in Grant Park’s Spirit of Music Garden as part of Chicago SummerDance, followed by seven jam-packed days of performances and events in Chicago’s neighborhood parks, clubs, cultural centers and downtown venues, culminating with the “One World Under One Roof” finale featuring multiple concerts held throughout the Chicago Cultural Center from 6:30 to 11:30 pm.

Highlights include the Chicago debut of Staff Benda Bilili, an extraordinary group of paraplegic street musicians from the Democratic Republic of Congo who perform on homemade instruments, make their Chicago debut as part of their first U.S. Tour; The Creole Choir of Cuba (Caribbean); Boubacar Traore Trio (Mali); Sounds & Rhythms of Afghanistan; Esma Redžepova (Macedonia); Movits! (Sweden) Mad Professor (UK), among many others.

Pete Wentz, Aaron Paul, Maps & Atlases and a few other awesome surprise guests will be battling it out at 11AM in front of the South Stage at Lollapalooza. 54th Annual Gold Coast Art Fair at Grant Park

Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10 from 9 am – 7 pm

Select artists will discount their work from9:00 a.m.to10:00 a.m.on Saturday and Sunday morning!

The Gold Coast Art Fair returns to Grant Park’s Butler Field, at the corner of Monroe and Lake Shore Drive. Heralded as the “Granddaddy of American Art Festivals,” the Gold Coast Art Fair at Grant Park is rated as one of the top twenty festivals nationally and is the third oldest and by far one of the most well attended art festivals in Chicago. Free and open to the public, the Gold Coast Art Fair at Grant Park showcases the work of more than 350 juried artists from around the world with prices ranging $25 to $25,000.

In addition to the juried artists exhibiting, the Gold Coast Art Fair at Grant Park will proudly host 20 emerging artists from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Nearby attractions including Millennium Park and the Art Institute add to the perfect expedition exploring Chicago and the Gold Coast Art Fair at Grant Park.

Chicago Together 2011 Inaugural Festivities


The 2011 Inaugural festivities will start on Saturday, May 14th with a city-wide day of community service. Chicagoans, along with the Mayor-elect, City Clerk-elect, and Treasurer will participate in service activities in neighborhoods across the city. Event details and times can be found below:

  • Sat, May 14th
    The weekend kicks off with a City-wide Day of Service. Chicagoans, with the Mayor-elect, City Clerk-elect, and Treasurer will come together to perform service activities in their neighborhoods and across the city


  • Sat, May 14th
    Everyone is invited to a free family concert at Butler Field in Grant Park. Bring picnics and lawn chairs but no alcohol or glass will be permitted. Admission to the event is free, but a ticket will be required for entry. Sign-up below.


  • Mon, May 16th
    The swearing in of the Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel, City Clerk-elect Susana Mendoza, Treasurer Stephanie Neely, and City Council will be held at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. This event is open to the public.


  • Mon, May 16th
    Mayor-elect Emanuel will host an open house on the 5th floor of City Hall from 2pm-4pm following the swearing-in ceremony. This is an opportunity for Chicago’s 46th Mayor to greet his constituents and members of the public.
