More Dance Than Dinner Soiree Returns to Support CAM

More Dance Than Dinner Soiree

More Dance than Dinner Soiree

December 16, 2011

Showtime
9:00pm-11:00 pm
After Party
11:00pm-2:00 pm
at TantriK

The Chicago Academy of Music will offer financially sustainable free music education through a variety of programs for children who are underserved and/or chronically poor residents in the South and West sides of Chicago. Programs offered will utilize both Suzuki and traditional methods of musical instruction and will be available mostly for children from a low socioeconomic status (SES) background. The programs offered include weekly musical instruction, daily after-school group music classes, and specialized year-round workshops. While the priorities and goals of each program will differ, they will all serve the mission of the academy.

“The mission of the Chicago Academy of Music is to transform the lives of young people by instilling positive values through affordable music education.” A main functionality of the Chicago Academy of Music is illustrated in our programs using Instruments of Transformation. Not only will students develop into proficient musicians, but their experience with their instrument, their instructor, and (in most cases) with their parent will directly impact areas of their lives outside of the music academy.

We are currently fundraising for the purpose of purchasing and renovating our first location at 4341 South Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago IL.  Integral to our renovation plans are a daycare and café, which will generate the revenue required to ensure the long-term sustainability of the music program. The daycare will specialize in early math, science, reading and music education through play coupled with bilingual teaching. Sustainable free music education will only be achieved after we reach our overall donation target of $2.5 million.

The plan to reach the targeted donation amount is by way of a series of fundraisers, specifically, the monthly “More Dance Than Dinner” events running from November to June. These two-hour events will showcase the finest vocalists, instrumentalists and dancers Chicago has to offer. Hit songs will be selected and arranged for the specific instrumentation of each performance. An example of this is Maroon 5’s #1 best seller “She would be loved” played through the rigors of the genre’s: Classical, Cuban jazz, Gospel, Salsa landing on R&B; unveiled in front of the audience coupled with (where possible) dance performance. For the aforementioned to be achieved, CAM, in conjunction with Purple Elephant Productions is seeking a tax deductible donation and/or a tax deductible donation toward sponsorship for the planning and production process for the first fundraiser of the series, which is scheduled to take place on December16, 2011, 9:00pm-11:00pm at Tantric. Thank you and we hope you can be our sponsor or a donation.

Pledge Your Support for Small Business Saturday

Pledge Your Support for Small Business Saturday

The holiday season has officially begin.  Tonight we start with Black Wednesday going out with friends and drinking through the wee hours of the night looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow morning before we head to our friends, families, or other destination to eat a full meal for the Thanksgiving holiday.  And of course let us not forget the biggest shopping day of the year, Black Friday, where patrons line-up in the middle of the night in hopes of getting their hands on some great deals.  Come Monday, shoppers will have another chance to score some great bargains via the internet for Cyber Monday.  In between all of that we also celebrate Small Business Saturday this weekend where we pledge to support smaller companies.  The 2nd annual Small Business Saturday® is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.  On November 26, we’re asking millions of people to Shop Smallsm at their favorite local stores and help fuel the economy. When we all shop small, it will be huge.

McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Chicago 2011

Chicago Thanksgiving Parade 2011

Chicago’s McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade in Brief:

Chicago’s Thanksgiving Parade kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on November 24, 2011 and features giant inflatables, marching bands, dancers and more.

Where: State Street from Congress to Randolph

When: Thursday, November 24, 2011 (Thanksgiving Day)

Time: 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Admission: FREE!

Getting to the Parade by Public Transportation:

CTA Red Line subway to any stop along the parade route — Jackson, Monroe or Washington stops. Alternately, CTA Brown/Orange/Green line to the Library/State/Van Buren stop.

About the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade:

Hey, New York isn’t the only one with a Thanksgiving Day parade. Chicago puts on its own pretty great turkey day spectacular, thank you very much, and has done so since 1934. The State Street Thanksgiving Parade is attended by over 400,000 spectators and features over 100 participating “units”, including marching bands, floats, horses, drill teams, circus performers, and more.

The parade also features huge character balloons, some topping out at 50 feet tall. Previous years’ cast of balloon characters have included Elmo, the Pink Panther, the Cookie Monster, Popeye, Kermit the Frog, Bear in the Big Blue House, Strawberry Shortcake, Tom Turkey, Rudolph, The Nutcracker, Big Bird, Animal and Billy Blazes. Trust me that the people holding on to the long ropes tethering the balloons hope that the Windy City does not live up to its name on that day…

So if you’re fretting being in Chicago instead of NYC on Thanksgiving, head on down to the State Street Thanksgiving Parade, stand in front of the Macy’s, and you’ll never know the difference.
